Workshop #2: Kodály for Violin Teachers: How Singing Serves Both Technique and Literacy

About the workshop:
This workshop will be a hands-on experience using materials from The Complete Musician, a five-year curriculum for teaching aural literacy to young violinists. Principles will apply to other string instruments as well. Emphasis will be given to singing as the vehicle for developing inner hearing, which is used for building technique on the instrument and gaining aural literacy (hearing in your head what you see on the page). Learning will follow most North American Kodály sequences which use folk songs of those cultures and literature from the classical repertoire. Participants are encouraged to bring a violin to the classes.
About the Clinician:
Cynthia V. Richards, free-lance professional violinist and studio pedagogue.
BA in Violin Performance at Brigham Young University and private study with Franz Samohyl,
Vienna Academy. Instructor in violin performance and string pedagogy at BrighamYoung
University (BYU) and Utah Valley University. Private studio for over 60 years. Concertmaster
of Utah Valley Symphony in Provo, Utah, for many years.
Co-author of The Complete Musician series for teaching string students, based on Kodály
principles of music education. String specialist at the Intermuse Academy, Kodály teacher
certification course at BYU.
Mother of eight children, whom she used as her laboratory subjects in her book How to Get Your
Child to Practice Without Resorting to Violence. (1985)
Her work has been featured recently in the American String Teacher: “Kodály for String
Teachers” (August 2025) and “Orchestra Prep-Step by Step” (February 2026).

Join national presenter Anthony Molinaro in an immersive, movement-based exploration of tonal concepts-all set in an action-packed superhero theme! Through engaging Dalcroze strategies, you’ll sing, move, and play your way to stronger musical instincts, experiencing firsthand how embodied learning deepens understanding. Whether you’re new to Dalcroze or a seasoned Kodály practitioner, you’ll discover fresh ideas that align beautifully with familiar practices. No prior experience is needed-just bring your curiosity, your voice, and a willingness to move!
About the Clinician:
Anthony Molinaro is a highly experienced music educator, instrumentalist, podcaster, and producer who has dedicated his career to the Dalcroze approach. With over 16 years of experience in public school classrooms on both coasts of the United States, Molinaro has helped countless students develop a love of music.
Molinaro is also a faculty member and guest lecturer at Carnegie Mellon University, where he is pursuing graduate studies in Music Education. He is a sought-after clinician and presenter, having spoken at events hosted by PMEA District 7 and District 5, as well as at Elizabethtown College, Westminster College, Duquesne University, Slippery Rock University, Grove City College, Waynesburg University, and Messiah College.
As a leader in the field of music education, Molinaro has served as the board chair and treasurer of the Dalcroze Society of America, and has presented at two national conferences and several national virtual events. He has presented workshops for NAfME, Music Construct ED, and the Virtual Dalcroze Meetup, and runs an online roundtable forum for the leadership of the major national pedagogical organizations.
Molinaro's podcast, The New Dalcrozian, has an international listenership that spans over 48 countries, and his popular SubStack newsletter, MusicXT - Moments and Movement, allows subscribers to follow his thoughts and career in real time, with many instructional videos and content to help embrace the Dalcroze approach in a public school setting.
